Set it up

  • Mark a 10 × 10 m square, or 8 × 8 m for younger players.
  • Four attackers stand one on each side. One defender starts in the middle.

How it works

  1. Attackers pass around and across the square, keeping the ball away from the defender.
  2. Attackers stay on the outside but can move along their side to support.
  3. If the defender wins the ball or it leaves the square, the player who lost it swaps into the middle.
  4. Rotate after 60–90 seconds if the defender hasn’t won it.

Coaching points

  • Move along your side to give the passer an angle, so there are always two options.
  • Open your hips as you receive so you can play either way.
  • When the defender is drawn to one side, look for the pass through the middle.
  • Defender: curve your run to cut off one passing option.
